What font is the Star Wars logo?
Custom lettering, drawn by Suzy Rice in 1977 and refined for the film’s titles. It is not a typeface anyone can license — the logo is a single piece of artwork, with the S and the R shaped to lock together.
What can be matched is the underlying idea: a heavy geometric sans, very wide, with flat horizontal terminals and almost no contrast between thick and thin.

Where the style comes from
The 1977 logo came out of a brief for something bold and slightly fascist-looking, and the answer was a very wide, very heavy geometric — a style that reads as monumental at any size because the letters are built from circles and straight lines rather than drawn strokes.
That geometry is why substitutes get close. The width and the even weight do most of the work; the specific curve of the original S is the part no free font will give you.
Setting it well
- Set it wide and tight — the letters should nearly touch, because the logo reads as one solid block rather than a word
- Yellow on black with a slight perspective taper is more recognisable than the typeface alone
- Avoid adding a stroke or outline; the original is a flat fill and gains nothing from an edge
