What font is the The Grinch logo?

The books use Dr. Seuss’s own hand-lettering — bouncy capitals that swell in the middle and taper at the ends, with no two quite alike.

The films have each relettered it, but all of them keep the same bounce and the same slightly rubbery weight.

The fonts here

  • Grinch 3 is the closest to the bouncing, uneven capitals of the book titles.
  • Grinch Plus is a heavier cut of the same idea, better at poster size.
  • Icicle Country 2 adds the snow-capped treatment for a more Christmas-card feel.

All three are free to download and use, including commercially.

Where the style comes from

Seuss drew his lettering with a brush, which is why the strokes swell and thin rather than holding an even width, and why the baseline wanders instead of sitting flat.

Any font imitating it has to fake that variation with a single set of shapes, so the result reads best in short words where the repetition is not obvious.

Setting it well

  • Keep it to one or two words — repeated letters expose the trick quickly
  • Let the baseline rise and fall rather than sitting flat
  • Red and green is obvious; the films lean on acid green against warm cream, which looks less like clip art

The Grinch is a trademark of Dr. Seuss Enterprises, L.P.

Frequently asked questions about the The Grinch Font

Is the The Grinch Font free to download?

Yes. Grinch 3, Grinch Plus, and Icicle Country 2 are free to download on this page. Check each designer's terms before commercial use.

Is this the exact font used for The Grinch?

Not exactly. The original lettering was custom drawn or is not publicly licensed, so the fonts here are close recreations. Grinch 3 is the nearest match we have found.

Can I use the The Grinch Font commercially?

Treat that as two separate questions. The font file needs a licence that permits commercial use, which is set by whoever made it. Separately, the brand name, logo and characters are trademarks, so recreating a logo can infringe even with a properly licensed font. For merchandise or client work, check both.
