What font is the Undertale logo?

The logo is bitmap lettering — letters built on a pixel grid rather than drawn as curves, so every diagonal is a staircase and every corner is square. That is a deliberate choice, not a limitation: the game was made in GameMaker in 2015 and its whole look points back to the 16-bit era it is affectionately arguing with.

Two different faces matter here, because the game itself uses two. The title is one thing; the dialogue box, which is what most people actually remember, is another.

The fonts here

• Monster Friend by Harry Wakamatsu is the closest to the title lettering — the same heavy pixel construction with rounded outer corners, and it holds up at poster size where thinner pixel faces fall apart.
• 8bitoperator is the one to use for dialogue. It is a narrower, lighter bitmap face that matches the in-game text box far better than the title face does, and it stays legible at small sizes.

Where the style comes from

Bitmap type exists because early hardware stored each character as a small grid of pixels — often 8×8 — so letterforms had to be built from squares. Curves were expensive, diagonals were approximated, and the constraints produced shapes nobody would draw by hand.

Modern pixel fonts imitate that grid on purpose. This is one of the rare cases where a free font can be genuinely exact rather than merely close, because the original was a grid of squares and a grid of squares is reproducible.

Setting it well

• Set the size to a whole multiple of the font’s pixel grid — anything else resamples the squares and the edges blur, which defeats the entire effect
• Turn off font smoothing and anti-aliasing wherever the tool allows it
• White on black with generous letter-spacing matches the dialogue box; the title treatment is tighter and heavier, so do not mix the two in one layout
