Where the style comes from
Metal band logos developed their own visual grammar in the late seventies and eighties: symmetry, extended points on the first and last letters, and enough aggression to read from the back of a venue.
The rule that matters is symmetry. The first and last letters extend outward by the same amount, framing the word — that balance is what makes these logos feel designed rather than merely spiky.
Setting it well
- Extend the first and last letters outward and keep them symmetrical
- Leave the middle letters plain; decorating all of them turns it into noise
- Silver or chrome with a dark outline reads more like a record sleeve than flat black
