Where the style comes from
Military aircraft markings are stencilled, which forces flat terminals and simple shapes, and the italic lean is a graphic-design addition that suggests motion without needing an illustration.
Combining the two — stencil bluntness with an aggressive slant — is the whole trick, and it is why a plain italic sans never quite works.
Setting it well
- Lean it further than feels comfortable; a gentle italic reads as a typo rather than a design choice
- Set it in capitals with tight spacing, then add a thin horizontal rule above and below
- Gold or off-white on navy is closer to the poster than pure white on black
